Title:                Mastering the AMA Guides, Fifth Edition: In-depth Learning Experiences with Dr.  Brigham

Director:           Christopher R. Brigham, MD, Editor, Guides Newsletter

Series:              CSIMS Zoominar

Dates/Times:    Friday, 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm PT

(No sessions during July and August, and the last two weeks of December)

These learning experiences will enhance your ability to accurately assess permanent impairment using the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Fifth Edition, and therefore your success.  Mastering these skills is essential to any stakeholder who uses the Guides, including physician evaluators, attorneys, claims professionals, and other stakeholders.

On Friday from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm PT, the correct use of the AMA Guides is explained in detail by Chris Brigham, MD, Editor of the Guides Newsletter, and other skilled faculty. On Tuesday from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm PT, relevant clinical content is provided by Sana Khan, MD, Ph.D., Tom Grant, DC, and other skilled faculty. The live events are open to all; however, access to the recorded events is restricted at the CSIMS site to CSIMS members

Features of this learning experience:

  • Brigham will guide you through the AMA Guides page by page, sharing with you his insights to having worked with the AMA Guides for over three decades. Over several months all pages of the Guides will be explored.
  • You must have your Guides and a highlighter pen with you as you attend the weekly sessions.
  • Case and report examples are used to illustrate how impairment is assessed. You are actively involved in assessing cases.
  • You will learn how to analyze the clinical facts and efficiently use the processes and criteria provided in the AMA Guides to provide a correct, defensible impairment rating.

Benefits to you:

  • You will gain insights and learn “secrets” on assessing clinical issues and impairment.
  • You will be more successful with more referrals if you can provide accurate impairment ratings.
  • As a health care professional, you will become more efficient and provide higher quality, sought-after services, resulting in greater professional and financial success. For other stakeholders, you will become more effective in evaluating and managing impairment ratings.
  • You will be prepared to pass the examination to be a Certified Impairment Rater.

For you to maximize the value of these learning experiences, you must take the following steps.

  1. Complete a 10 item mini-assessment about your knowledge of the AMA (No cost)
  2. Subscribe to the online training at www.fifthedition.com. These unique learning resources will complement the live sessions. You will also gain access to tools that you will use in assessing impairment. You will be provided with assignments involving the use of these resources. CSIMS members receive a 10% discount by using the promotional code of “csims.” (The fee for an annual subscription with the discount is $438.30)
  3. Subscribe to the full archive of the AMA Guides Newsletters, 1996 to present. We will reference crucial content published by the AMA that you can use and reference in your assessments. Reading assignments are made. (The AMA subscription fee is $479.00 for one year.)
  4. Have your AMA Guides with your during each training session and follow along with the presentation. You should highlight the text that Dr. Brigham highlights and add notations.
  5. Participate actively by responding to questions in polls and chats and by submitting your questions.

You can attend the live sessions for free and be passive; however, your learning will be dramatically enhanced by taking the above steps. (Note that the costs involved with the subscriptions are less than half of the fee most evaluators typically earn from performing a single evaluation.)
